The Amala Foundation has worked for many years with the people of the Gui Village, Nigeria, to create sustainable solutions in their village. Through our Living Water Program we were able to raise enough funds to procure and install 2 water wells in 2005, and we are preparing to install a third well to satisfy the needs of a growing population. This well is expected to be installed in late 2008.

The Gui Village is a village of approximately 3,600 people, of which about 2,000 are children. Since we first visited in 2004, many improvements have been made in the village. According to the last report we received from Gui, the schoolhouse has been repaired and classes have resumed there. Plans are also underway for a small community health clinic.

The Gui Village has lived in this localized area for over seventeen centuries. They are truly unique in their peaceful religious versatility. Unlike other parts of surrounding Africa, the Gui Villagers live among each other in peace despite their differences. The Gui Village also has one of the lowest HIV counts in the country. When we asked them what they needed most they answered:  water wells/pumps, books, and pencils. Their peaceful nature and willingness to welcome us into their village moved our hearts in the deepest of ways. These are truly a beautiful people. The Foundation has adopted the Gui Village as a part of our family.

Due to the positive reports we have received from our friends in Gui Village, we have concluded our activities in Nigeria at this time.

inspired youth...

Lotus Belle-Glover is a 5th grader at the Marin Horizon School in Mill Valley, California.
Lotus was inspired to raise money to build a well in Africa when she saw the documentary of Ryan’s Well, about a first grade boy from Canada who became an advocate for building wells in Uganda. In the beginning of 2007 she sent out an email in her own words to many friends and family, and by September she had raised $1500. Shortly after that she met Vanessa and knew that is where she wished the funds to go.

Someday Lotus would like to go to Africa to see both the wells in Nigeria and the town in Ethiopia that her rock band is helping.
