Meet the Staff

Class Descriptions

Music & Movement

On Tuesdays we'll be exploring the rhythms of the world through movement, singing and games. This class, taught by local percussionist and educator, Lauren Checchio, will offer kids an opportunity to experience rhythm on all levels. We will explore other cultures through dance and song and play rhythmic games all designed to get us in the groove. We will pull from the traditions of India, Egypt and Africa, offering a powerful musical/cultural foundation from which to explore our weekly themes of Courage, Confidence, Compassion and Community.

Nature & The Elements

In our Nature & The Elements course, explorers will have the opportunity to connect with the local natural environment as well as their own inner natures. In the fast-paced modern world of media and technology, many people, especially children, are losing touch with the natural world. Under the capable guidance of Breez Smith, Urban Roots staff member and former GYPS participant, explorers will be working with their hands each week to reclaim that connection and cultivate a healthy respect for Mother Earth. Using the principles of permaculture we will bridge ancient traditional concepts with modern methods to provide a greater understanding of our role as stewards of our environment. The youth will be encouraged to experiment with and develop their own ideas while we provide a focus on the themes of Inspiration, Harmony, Authenticity, Leadership, Freedom & Creativity, and Community. These weekly themes will allow us to go deeper than the top-soil, to strengthen roots in these values and nourish the blossoming of each explorer's potential. With the culmination of this six-week session, the youth will be ready to reap the harvest of their herb and vegetable gardens and host a local, organic potluck. We look forward to feasting with you!

Earth Arts

The rich and wondrous Earth is an art studio in and of itself. The remembrance of Nature's simple offerings and what humans can give back though creativity and stewardship will be main lesson inherent in Earth Arts every Wednesday. Local artist, Jean-Pierre Verdijo, will be leading our explorations into Nature to find out how simple resources such as sticks, rocks and leaves can be used to create incredible works of art. We'll also be doing a riverbed cleanup to prepare our outdoor studio and serve the community in a single action. Nature and creativity will serve as the perfect springboard to explore our themes of Courage, Confidence, Compassion and Community.

Mondays: Nature & the Elements

Tuesdays: Music & Movement

Wednesdays: Creativity & Art

Infinite possibility is present at the core of each human heart and mind. In a supportive and encouraging environment, explorers will make unexpected and amazing discoveries that have the power to touch, move, heal, and inspire. As facilitators, we honor our youth in their unique and perfect expression and support them in embracing themselves and others with love, compassion, encouragement, and respect.
